Pre-Checks and Final Decision
Editorial Decisions come before and after the Peer Review process and are crucial steps in the editorial process.
In JAMS, Handling Editors have the ability to use Academic Editors from their Editorial Board to give recommendations. To add Academic Editors into your JAMS system, see this article.
Pre-Checks
When the Handling Editor is assigned a manuscript to process, they can click on the manuscript file links shown below to read the submission.

Then the Handling Editor is asked whether or not the manuscript meets the requirements for the journal.
The Handling Editor is also given the option to invite an Academic Editor (a member of the Editorial Board) to give their recommendation on whether to accept the manuscript or not. By clicking either 'Invite' or 'choose another different editor from the Board', the HE can send an email through JAMS to get a recommendation.

If the HE chooses to invite an Academic Editor, the HE will send them an email through JAMS to them with a link where the Academic Editor can give their recommendation.

The HE will be notified when the Academic Editor has completed their recommendation. The HE can then find it here:

Whether they asked an Academic Editor for a decision or not, the HE must then choose whether the requirements are satisfied or not.

If the requirements are not satisfied, the author will be asked to revise their manuscript. The editor can detail what exactly needs to be changed in the email sent to the author.
The Pre-check would then begin again when the author resubmits through the link in the email.
If the Requirements are satisfied, the manuscript would then proceed to Peer Review.
Final Decision
The Final Decision occurs after the Peer Review has been closed.
The Editor will then ask an External (Academic Editor/Editorial Board Member) for their recommendation.

The system will then provide an Academic Editor to invite or the Editor can choose a different AE:

The HE will then send the External Editor an email through JAMS with a link to make the decision:

Once the AE has made their recommendation, the Handling Editor will be notified and can find it here:

The Handling Editor will then make the final editorial decision based on the Peer Review and Academic Editor recommendations:

Top Tip: There is also an option in the Application Features to allow Handling Editors and Journal Editors to make the decision. without consulting an external editor. To learn more, see here.
